King Khalid University, represented by the Deanship of Student Affairs and the Special Needs Center, recognised "International Day of Persons with Disabilities Day" by an event called "A Future to be Achieved". Vice Rector, Prof. Khlood Abu Melha, hosted the ceremonies. She explained that the purpose was to raise awareness of the needs and challenges of those with disabilities. Experts estimate that upwards of a billion people worldwide have a disability, and 1.5 million Saudis (7% of the population have a debilitating health issue).
Vice Rector Abu Melha noted that making sure students with disabilities fully participate in academic and social life at the university is a high priority. She thanked His Excellency Rector Al-Solamy for his continued support of the effort. She also thanked the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Abdullah Al-Atheed, Dr. Fatimah Shaban, Vice Dean of Student Affairs, Supervisor of the Special Needs Center, Dr. Amer Ali Jafar, and Deputy Supervisor of the Special Needs Center, Sareen Talal Bakri, for all their efforts in service of people with special needs.
Dr. Al Bakri said that it is an honour and pleasure to work for the benefit of the disabled on a daily basis. She noted that King Khalid University is tailoring programs to students with special needs in accord with Vision 2030.
Many students and faculty members from all colleges participated in the event.
