Dr. Rayan bin Ibrahim bin Duhaim, Assistant Professor and Consultant in Dental Technology at the Department of Dental Health Sciences, College of Applied Medical Sciences in Khamis Mushait at King Khalid University, has been granted a patent by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property
for his invention, "Automated Wax Rim Forming Device for Complete Dentures." The device is designed to automate the formation of wax occlusion rims used in recording jaw relationships and reduce variations associated with manual fabrication.
Dr. Bin Duhaim explained that the invention combines wax melting at a controlled temperature with its injection under regulated vertical pressure into interchangeable molds that replicate the upper and lower dental arches. The device also incorporates air-release vents and a wax-cooling system, aiming to shorten production time and produce wax rims with consistent dimensions and shapes.
The researcher noted that the design addresses challenges associated with manually forming wax rims in dental laboratories, where accuracy may vary depending on the technician's skill and trapped air bubbles may compromise their strength. The device seeks to overcome these challenges by controlling the forming stages and incorporating interchangeable molds, an air-release system, and wax cooling.
From a clinical perspective, the precision of wax rims is closely related to the accuracy of jaw relationship records, a stage that affects the stability of complete dentures and patient comfort. Accordingly, the device may help reduce the need to repeat jaw relationship recordings and make subsequent adjustments.
Regarding future applications, Dr. Bin Duhaim highlighted the possibility of digitally designing molds and producing them using 3D printing technologies based on patients' dental arch dimensions, allowing customization for individual cases. The device could also be used in dental laboratories, hospitals, and dental colleges, as well as an educational tool in dental technology programs. These applications provide opportunities to explore its development into a commercial product integrated with digital workflows in modern dental laboratories, with the potential to reduce production time and costs.
This achievement reflects King Khalid University's commitment to supporting scientific research and innovation and empowering its members to develop practical solutions in medical fields, strengthening the connection between scientific research and professional practice.
