Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Asir Region and Chairman of the Asir Development Authority, announced the approval of King Khalid University Medical City as a specialized medical city serving the southern regions. With a capacity of up to 750 beds and 41 medical specialties, the Medical City operates within an integrated system that brings together healthcare, education, research, and innovation. The announcement was made in the presence of His Excellency the Minister of Education, Mr. Yousef bin Abdullah Al-Benyan; His Excellency the Minister of Health, Mr. Fahad bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel; His Excellency Prof. Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Rubaish, Chief Executive Officer of the University Hospitals Program at the Council of Universities Affairs; and a number of leaders and officials from government, health, and education sectors.
The approval of the Medical City was announced during a ceremony to inaugurate a number of healthcare projects and initiatives in the region, held last Saturday at King Khalid University in Al-Fara'a. This comes within the framework of integration between the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and King Khalid University, with technical and scientific supervision from King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre. The initiative aims to advance healthcare and specialized medical services, enhance quality and efficiency, and expand the range of specialized services provided to beneficiaries across the region.
This initiative is part of a development pathway that began a year ago to leverage and further develop the existing capabilities and infrastructure of the Medical City to provide specialized healthcare services to the southern regions, instead of completing the King Faisal Medical City project for the southern regions in its previous form.
His Highness Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Asir Region, also inaugurated the Sheikh Malhi bin Salamah bin Saidan Dialysis Center at the University's Medical City. The center includes 27 dialysis stations and has a capacity of approximately 150 patients per week, enhancing the capacity of kidney care services and improving the level of care provided to beneficiaries.
His Highness also inaugurated the Sheikh Malhi bin Salamah bin Saidan Oncology Center, which includes 33 chemotherapy rooms and provides integrated services encompassing surgical, radiation, and drug therapies, diagnostic nuclear medicine, specialized clinics, and supportive and palliative care services. This strengthens the oncology care system and enhances the integration of specialized healthcare services in the region.
His Highness and the accompanying delegation also toured the Malhi bin Salamah bin Saidan Medical Rehabilitation and Prosthetics Center, which includes 38 specialized clinics, two therapeutic exercise halls, and a specialized laboratory. The center utilizes 3D printing and robotic rehabilitation technologies, strengthening the medical rehabilitation system and helping beneficiaries restore their functional abilities.
The center also provides specialized services in the manufacture of prosthetic limbs and orthotic devices, the fabrication of plaster and plastic molds, and the assembly of upper-limb prostheses, in addition to integrated rehabilitation solutions that contribute to improving beneficiaries' quality of life.
