The university's General Administration of Information Technology won the WSIS 2020 prize based on its "GoGeek" initiative. The GoGeek program is designed to raise interest in the technology sector through the development of smartphone apps, technological platforms and electronic games. The initiative also included education and training on cybersecurity, and problem-solving using the university's "IT Hub" platform. All of these efforts are in support of the national strategy set forth in Vision 2030.
The General Supervisor of the General Administration of Information Technology, Dr. Mohammad Alsaqer, explained that GoGeek is a result of the hard work of an ambitious team that helps fulfill great needs in society. He pointed out that trainees from a variety of educational backgrounds regardless of experience with technology.
Dr. Alsaqer stated that more than 12,500 benefited from this program. In addition, 124 male and female participants became technical specialists, and 24 internships were created. He also pointed that the initiative aims to benefit 20,000 more beneficiaries and increase specialists and place 150 technical specialists by the end of 2020. Dr. Alsaqer stated that GoGeek alumni will have ample job opportunities and that the Asir region will greatly benefit from improvement in the technical workforce.
The core of the GoGeek program is a technical one-month long boot camp for both males and females. GoGeek helps build a technologically oriented community and supports a culture of volunteer service and civic engagement through technical innovation.
