King Khalid University, represented by the Artificial Intelligence Center within the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, has launched the 2025 Artificial Intelligence Summer Fellowship program. The program involves 43 male and female students distributed across 16 applied research projects, under the direct supervision of several faculty members specialized in artificial intelligence. The program extends for six weeks, including the execution of advanced projects, scientific sessions, and skill-building workshops aimed at preparing students for research and innovation environments.
Dr. Ali bin Mohammed Al-Qahtani, Director of the AI Center at King Khalid University, explained that this year's program was a response to a clear need for applied programs that equip students with research skills in a practical context. He stated: "In this fellowship, we focused on integrating students into projects based on addressing real-world challenges using AI technologies, starting from formulating the research problem and analyzing data, all the way to building models and interpreting results. The participants showed high seriousness and excellent interaction throughout all implementation stages."
Dr. Al-Qahtani pointed out that the program included fully equipped workshops and allowed students continuous communication with supervisors through individual and group sessions, in addition to Journal Club meetings that helped enhance scientific analysis capabilities and comparison between research experiments. The projects also covered diverse topics, including: cultural representations in language models, optimizing energy consumption in large models, data leakage tracking, smart applications in the tourism sector in the Aseer region, analyzing harmful influencer content, and other projects related to vital societal issues.
Dr. Al-Qahtani indicated that this type of research program opens wider horizons for students and enhances their future opportunities in technical and academic tracks. He also noted a direction to expand the scope of the fellowship in the future to include larger segments of students and additional fields.
