Once again final exams for the semester are upon us. This is a critical time for our students. This week is dominated by intense studying, reviews, and test-taking. Although this is a difficult period, all of the hard work and sacrifice are worth the effort.


Our young people are the future of our society. It is imperative that we develop their skills, knowledge, culture, and religion to assure the Kingdom's continued success and development. Education necessarily involves a commitment to excellence and perseverance. These are the exact qualities our young people need to be successful in their personal and professional endeavors. It is incumbent upon us as educators to facilitate the continuing development of these characteristics in our young men and women. It is also incumbent upon the families of our students to provide encouragement and support during this challenging time.


One cannot overstate the importance of family support for students taking exams. Exams involve stress and oftentimes mental and emotional exhaustion for the student. Moreover, exams occur in a short period of time with multiple tests given in the same week or even on the same day. Furthermore, students have the additional and stressful burden of wanting to excel academically. In sum, students are under a tremendous amount of pressure during these examination periods. Educators and psychologists note the physical and mental side effects of examination-related stress. In addition, students often resort to stimulants and medications to ameliorate their adverse conditions. Side effects from these can result in even more unhealthy symptoms for things such as an inability to concentrate and sleep disorders.


The ultimate issue is how do we help students best manage the issues related to examinations. First, students must take the primary role. Preparation is the key to successfully managing obligations and stress arising out of examination periods. Students must learn to manage their time and work efficiently so that they have sufficient periods in which to study intensively for each subject. Also, students must eat well and exercise during the school year. A proper diet along with appropriate amounts of physical activity helps keep the mind sharp and increase endurance in studying. Having this positive atmosphere and orderly lifestyle will help students reduce the pressure they feel and anxieties that plague them during exam periods.


Families also have a significant role to play in helping students. Some young people are often distracted by mundane obligations or unimportant social activities. These activities waste valuable time that could be devoted to education. Families should encourage students to use their time wisely and make sure that frivolous or counter-productive activities are minimized. Also, families should monitor student behavior to make sure they are not resorting to artificial stimulants or other medications to deal with the stress of school. We should advise students to break their study activities into manageable chunks of time with sufficient rest periods in between. Avoiding 'cram sessions' and 'all-nighters' is important because these strategies most often fail. We should encourage our students to study in a manageable and consistent manner so that they do not burn out from exhaustion and/or anxiety.


We should be mindful that examinations are not a punishment, but merely a way of monitoring student achievement. The 'real-world' evaluates people based on results on a continuous basis. Examinations are a way of teaching students responsibility. Part of the benefits of tests is that it gives the students discipline to perform consistently under pressure. These are the exact conditions which they will face once entering the workforce and will live with for many decades. It is a best practice for students to take responsibility for exam preparation and overcoming the difficulties of being evaluated on multiple fronts in a short time frame.


Important Tips


By popular demand, the following is a list of practical recommendations for successfully - God willing - navigating the examination periods:


Exam Day


  • Wake up early after a good night's sleep.
  • Briefly review summaries of the main topics.
  • Eat an excellent high-protein breakfast.
  • Be sure to pray and thank your family for their support.
  • Plan on arriving 30 minutes early to account for delays.


Exam Time


  • Trust in God.
  • Focus on your knowledge, not negative thoughts or fears.
  • Remember that the test is a cumulative measure of what you learned throughout the year.
  • Acknowledge that you have done, and are doing, your best.


Other Helpful Tips


  • Begin by saying 'In the name of Allah, the most Merciful and the most Beneficent'.
  • Legibly write your name and student number.
  • Read through the entire exam before answering any questions.
  • Relax and take deep breaths during the exam.
  • Manage your time and try not to rush.
  • Be prepared to skip difficult questions and come back to them once all other questions are complete.
  • Check your work.

Achieving Success Under Stress

King Khalid University is currently administering final exams for the first semester of the 1439-40 academic year. This is a significant undertaking. Approximately 60,000 students from 30 different campuses are taking final examinations en masse. Of course, this requires great effort on the part of our faculty and administrators.


Dean of Admissions and Registration, Dr. Abdulmohsen Al-Qarni, said 'Students have been working hard in general test preparation and have taken tests for numerous courses during the past week. During this period, the Deanship of Admissions and Registration was busy preparing the final exams under the close supervision of the university rector. The university took great care in coordinating all of the examinations and made sure that the tests best served the needs of the student, accommodating student preferences whenever possible'. Dean Al-Qarni also explained that the university is continuously seeking methods to improve the educational experience for the students and to ensure that student proficiency testing remains valid, fair, and balanced. All of these efforts, he related, are well worth it as increased student motivation and commitment to preparing for exams are increasing. Dean Al-Qarni urged all eligible students to submit proper documentation in the event of 'deprivation status' due to excessive absences. He concluded by emphasizing that the Deanship of Admissions and Registration is committed to expediting diplomas and transcripts for graduating students in that they can move forward with their careers in a timely fashion.


Dean of the Graduate Studies, Dr. Ahmad Al-Faye, said 'The Deanship of Graduate Studies embarked on a program to ensure optimal scheduling well in advance of final exams'. Based on feedback from many different colleges and their respective faculty and students, the Deanship of Graduate Studies identified several process improvements that helped to deliver a more efficient and effective exam timetable applicable to the different colleges. By consulting all of the relevant stakeholders in advance, the university ensured a more successful and more efficient final examination period.

As part of the international cooperation initiative at King Khalid University, His Excellency King Khalid University Rector, Pro. Falleh R.M. Al-Solamy, was pleased to welcome a delegation from Swansea University in the United Kingdom in his office on the 5th of Rabī' Al-Thānī.


At the beginning of the meeting, Rector Al-Solamy welcomed the visiting delegation and expressed King Khalid University's eagerness to benefit from local, regional and international expertise, including Swansea University, to develop the university and to continue to climb in world rankings. He related that achieving top-200 international status by 2030 is the goal. His Excellency expressed gratitude to the University of Swansea for this visit.


Also in attendance was Vice Rector for Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Merzin Al-Shahrani, who discussed plans to enhance cooperation in joint research programs, faculty and student exchange programs, and English language education. Cooperation in these fields, he explained, aims to bring improvement in the quality of educational outputs and to apply the best quality practices at the regional, national, and international levels. The delegation watched a presentation about King Khalid University and its achievements in ranking at the regional, national, and international levels. They also reviewed the academic programs, research achievements, and recent scientific publications.


After the meet-and-greet, the delegation went on a tour and held meetings with a number of colleges in order to exchange views and identify areas of possible joint cooperation.

On the 5th of Rabī' al-Thānī, His Excellency King Khalid University Rector, Prof. Falleh R.M. Al-Solamy, chaired a meeting with the Higher Committee for e-Transactions and Information Technology Program (YESSER) during the University Council meeting.


'Yesser' is a government initiative designed to improve and upgrade e-services throughout the Kingdom as part of the National Enterprise Architecture Program. The university plans on utilizing the services and capabilities under the YESSER program to improve university e-services infrastructure. The participants at the meeting discussed university needs along with the policies and procedures of the institutional structure.


CIO, Dr. Salem Alelyani, explained that the Enterprise Architecture Unit is responsible for the university's electronic infrastructure and digital transformation initiatives. The unit's efforts are in alignment with and support the national policies and plan objectives as set forth in the national strategic plan for digital transformation. The department is also responsible for operational tests, evaluation of information transaction systems, and compliance with university guidelines and the applicable Higher Committee for e-Transactions and Information Technology requirements.


During the meeting, the 'Yesser' team provided an overview of the enterprise architecture and the role it plays in accelerating the improvement of digital services and other related functional areas. Much of the cooperative work is optimized digitally to avoid waste and duplication of efforts. This ensures a swift, efficient, and cost-effective project implementation. The team also presented the requirements for the first phase of the enterprise architecture project as specified in the Office of National Enterprise Architecture at King Khalid University.


At the conclusion of the event, Rector Al-Solamy thanked the members of the 'Yesser' program team and its sponsors. He also praised the program and said that the university community was looking forward to a successful partnership with the 'Yesser' program team. Rector Al-Solamy has established an advisory group to interface with the 'Yesser' program team, so there is a clear basis for communication between the two organizations.

جامعة الملك خالد - المركز الإعلامي

أدى اليوم الأحد أكثر من 60 ألف طالب وطالبة من جامعة الملك خالد، اختبارات الفصل الأول من العام الجامعي 1439 /1440هـ، في أكثر من 29 مجمعا أكاديميًّا، ومن مختلف الدرجات العلمية (البكالوريوس، والدبلوم العالي، والماجستير، والدكتوراه). 

وقال عميد القبول والتسجيل الدكتور عبدالمحسن القرني: أنهى الطلاب خلال الأسبوع المنصرم اختبارات مواد الإعداد العام و الجزء العملي لبعض المقررات، بعد أن أكملت عمادة القبول والتسجيل، بتوجيهات من معالي مدير الجامعة، وبالتنسيق مع الكليات، إعداد جداول الاختبارات النهائية، لجميع طلاب وطالبات الجامعة، بما يتناسب مع أوضاع الطلاب، وأكد القرني أن الجامعة حرصت على تهيئة الظروف المناسبة للطلبة لأداء اختباراتهم، والقيام بجميع الترتيبات التي ستسير فيها الاختبارات لينعموا بأجواء محفزة وحيوية. 

ونوه بأهمية التزام الطلبة بالأوقات المحددة لجميع المقررات الدراسية، حسب الجداول التي تم بثها، على بوابة أكاديميا، مطالبًا بأهمية تقديم الأعذار للكلية بشكل عاجل في حال وجود أي عوائق لدى الطالب أو الطالبة تمنع من أداء الاختبار؛ ليتسنى معالجة أوضاعهم في أسرع وقت، قبل بدء التسجيل لجداول الفصل القادم. 

 وأشار القرني إلى أن العمادة تعمل على متابعة سير الاختبارات و عمليات الرصد المستمرة للدرجات؛ لتتمكن من إنهاء العمليات الأكاديمية المتعلقة بطباعة وثائق الخريجين، وكذلك  التحويل و تسجيل الجداول للفصل الدراسي القادم خلال وقت وجيز.

وفي ذات السياق أبان عميد عمادة الدراسات العليا الدكتور أحمد آل فايع أن العمادة أكملت منذ وقت مبكر وبالتنسيق مع الكليات الاستعدادات لاختبارات طلاب وطالبات الدراسات العليا، مشيرًا إلى أن العمادة تحرص على التنسيق مع الكليات حول استطلاع آراء الطلاب والطالبات لوضع الجداول وفق ما يلائم الكليات وأعضاء هيئة التدريس ويتسق مع التقويم الأكاديمي وفي الوقت نفسه يضمن للطلاب اقتراح الجدول الذي يمكّنهم من أداء الاختبارات بيسر ويهيئهم للنجاح والتفوق.

Dr. Al-Hazani, Professor of Neurology and Stroke at King Khalid University and Head of the Saudi Stroke Society, received an advanced award at the Bahrain Scientific Research Day of 2018. The research conference was organized by the Kingdom of Bahrain under the patronage of the Minister of the Royal Court, Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. Professor Al-Hazani's award recognizes his outstanding achievements in the study of genetics and epilepsy. Presenting the award were President of the Supreme Council of Health, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Khalifa. Also in attendance were several senior officials from the Ministry of Health, King Hamad University Hospital, and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.


Prof. Al-Hazani's research study provided valuable information on the effects of different genetic patterns of MDR on the characteristics and movements of phenytoin. The study measured responses in 90 subject patients in Saudi Arabia. The results provided differential diagnoses and statistical data on the kinetics of treatment and individual reactions to treatment. In his conclusion, Prof. Al-Hazani recommended further study including larger sample sizes and study subjects from varying regions. He posits that further research can illuminate the existing body of research on the impact of treatment dynamics on a broader scale.


Prof. Al-Hazani pointed out that epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases throughout the world. Despite quantum leaps in research and diagnosis, approximately 33% of epilepsy patients do not respond to treatment. Therefore, the good doctor's work is important to the global medical profession.


'It is well-known that phenytoin is considered as one of the most common drugs used in the treatment of epilepsy, but responses to treatment vary, and also the degree of side effects differ from one person to another, and this is why I conducted this study' he said.

استقبل معالي مدير جامعة الملك خالد الأستاذ الدكتور فالح بن رجاء الله السلمي، بمكتبه يوم الأربعاء الـ  5 من شهر ربيع الآخر، وفدًا من جامعة سوانزي البريطانية؛ لبحث سبل التعاون المشترك بين الجامعتين.

وفي بداية اللقاء رحب السلمي بالوفد الزائر، معربًا عن حرص الجامعة على الاستفادة من الخبرات المحلية والإقليمية والدولية؛ ومن ضمنها جامعة سوانزي، لتطوير الجامعة، ولكي تواصل التقدم في التصنيف العالمي؛ وتحقق رؤيتها بأن تكون ضمن أفضل 200 جامعة في العالم، بحلول عام 2030م، مقدماً شكره وامتنانه لجامعة سوانزي على هذه الزيارة.

وجرى خلال اللقاء  بحضور وكيل الجامعة للتطوير والجودة الدكتور مرزن الشهراني  بحث سبل تعزيز التعاون التعليمي والبحثي، وإقامة برامج بحثية مشتركة، وتبادل أعضاء هيئة التدريس والطلبة، والتعاون في مجال تعليم اللغة الإنجليزية، وذلك لتطوير جودة المخرجات التعليمية؛ وتطبيق أفضل ممارسات الجودة محليًّا وعالميًّا، كما اطلع الوفد على عرض مرئي عن جامعة الملك خالد وإنجازاتها،في مجال التصنيف الأكاديمي، محلياً وعربياً وعالمياً، وتم استعراض البرامج الأكاديمية، والإنجازات البحثية، والنشر العلمي، والمراكز البحثية في الجامعة.

عقب ذلك عقد الوفد عددًا من اللقاءات مع عدد من منسوبي الكليات الصحية والهندسية وكليات العلوم وعلوم الحاسب الآلي واللغات والترجمة والأعمال، وذلك لتبادل وجهات النظر، والتعرف على مجالات التعاون المشترك.
