Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Asir, His Excellency, King Khalid University Rector Prof. Falleh Al-Solamy, inaugurated a competition for Arabic calligraphy. This competition is part of the Mobaderoon initiative and is executed by the Deanship of Community Service and Continuing Education. It targets both citizens and residents who are interested in Arabic calligraphy.
Rector Al-Solamy praised His Royal Highness's patronage of this competition which coincides with the announcement by Minister of Culture, Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, that 2020 will be the “Year of Arabic Calligraphy." The Year of Arabic Calligraphy is in accord with the roles of the Ministries of Education and Culture in advancing various fields of education and culture and enhancing the presence of Arabic calligraphy in all sectors. It aims to spread awareness on the importance of this cultural heritage as it is one of the ancient esthetic cultural arts. Rector Al-Solamy confirmed that King Khalid University will continuously support all activities of benefit to the community.
Vice Rector for Business and Knowledge Economy, Prof. Abdullatif Al-Hadithi, thanked, during the inauguration meeting, His Excellency Rector Al-Solamy for the continuous support of initiatives that aim to encourage the talented. He also praised all the efforts dedicated to supporting culture, knowledge, and the Arabic language.
Dean of Community Service and Continuing Education, Prof. Omar Aqeel, praised the efforts of the university which stem from its strong belief in the importance of cultural initiatives. He pointed out that this competition will continue for three weeks where a selection of calligraphy artists will judge it. It includes the seven types of Arabic calligraphy: Athuluth, AlJali, Anaskh, Alruqa’ah, Alkufi, Aldewani, and Nasta’liq. Dean Aqeel noted that prizes would total 80,000 riyals.
Vice Dean of Academic Development and Quality, Deanship of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Ahmed Al-Zamili, explained that the competition aims to spread awareness on the importance of Arabic calligraphy, emphasize the aesthetic aspects of it and its different types, appreciate its value as a craft and discover new talents. It also aims to preserve its methods and rules, perfect the shapes of letters and words, encourage pride in Arabic and its arts, make good use of free time, and get to know some of the main spelling rules. The competition will work on the importance of writing skills, enriching the language, expanding the scope of knowledge, and getting used to writing neatly and slowly. It gives a chance to those interested in calligraphy and offers the knowledge they need by training them.
