The university recently conducted an assessment and evaluation forum. The purpose was to discuss issues and ideas for improving student academic performance assessments. The organizers wanted to reinforce the importance of fair and accurate student assessments, and show the important role faculty members have in student evaluation methods. At the conclusion of the forum, the standing committee proffered the following recommendations:

 

  • Implement national and international testing standards in higher education;
  • Conduct comparative studies of learning outcomes in higher education with relevant national project standards;
  • Establish learning outcome frameworks for various domestic professional disciplines;
  • Publish an electronic assessment and evaluation handbook complete with terminology and assessment strategies in Arabic and English.

 

One of the Deans participating in the forum, Dr. Salama Al-Ghraib, stressed the importance of having unified student examinations in higher education. Dr. Al-Ghraib said that this policy is necessary in order to assure adequate performance evaluation and fairness, stating 'This can be achieved through the use of standardized criteria, unified exams, question banks and faculty training'.

The Academic Development and Quality Deanship at King Khalid University held a number of field visits to follow the developments of academic programs nominated for accreditation. Those programs include:

 

  • Oral and Dental Surgery;
  • General Health;
  • Nursing;
  • Diagnostic Radiology;
  • Physiotherapy;
  • Sharia;
  • English;
  • Accounting.

 

The purpose of the field visit is to evaluate and prepare the documents required by the National Center for Accreditation and Assessment. Of note, the 6-course intensive training program will be held on the 14th, 15th, and 16th of Jumādā al-Ūlā. The courses include measuring performance indicators, evaluating program objectives, understanding learning outcomes, and applying self-assessment and self-study measurement tools.

The Academic Development and Quality Deanship at King Khalid University concluded all faculty member training programs and activities for the first semester of the 1439-40 academic year. The deanship offered 80 programs during the first semester. For the male colleges, 30 training courses with half being directed to faculty members were offered. The deanship also held three meetings, four training workshops, three introductory workshops for new faculty members, four workshops for satellite campus faculty members, and numerous internal reviewer training programs. In all, the programs witnessed nearly 500 participants.

 

For the female colleges, the deanship offered 15 training courses, eight faculty member workshops, and four introductory workshops for new faculty members. All training courses were held in the Leadership Hall. The deanship also held three online workshops that were delivered in the English language. In all, the programs witnessed nearly 350 participants.

 

The deanship also held 26 activities in collaboration with a number of colleges. Of note, International Quality Day was celebrated under the slogan 'Quality Based on Trust'. In addition, the deanship hosted the visit of the International Academic Assessment and Accreditation Center, the ABET Association, and the QS Association.

 

Among the performance enhancement programs, the deanship held the 'Development of the University Excellence Award Standard' workshop. In this workshop, the standards and conditions of the award were evaluated in the presence of college deans, vice deans of academic development and quality, faculty members, and quality employees. The workshop was attended by more than 110 university members, while more than 4,000 participated in numerous online sessions.

 

Regarding the university's qualified academic accredited programs, the deanship organized more than 27 programs that included but not limited to:

  • The Oral and Dental Surgery Program;
  • The Public Health Program;
  • The Nursing Science Program;
  • The Diagnostic Radiology Program;
  • The Physiotherapy Program;
  • The Sharia and Fundamentals of Religion Program;
  • The English Language Program;
  • The Accounting Programs.

 

For his part, Dean of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Hajri, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to His Excellency Prof. Falleh R.M. Al-Solamy and Vice Rector of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Merzin Al-Shahrani, for their support and encouragement.

On the 17th of Rabī' Al-Ākhir, His Excellency King Khalid University Rector, Prof. Falleh R.M. Al-Solamy, honored participants and leaders in the university's academic development and quality work in the 1439-40 academic year. The ceremony took place at the university reception hall in the administration building.

 

The honorees included: Participants in the internal reviewer qualification training program, colleges that participated in World Quality Day, distinguished faculty and staff in academic development and quality, and participants in the external quality review. The university also recognized and honored those faculty and staff who are focused on continuous quality improvement throughout the university system. Quality and continuous improvement touches and concerns all aspects of both academic and administrative functions.

 

King Khalid University has a strong commitment to develop and grow in all fields through its vision and mission to develop the quality of education and learning. This will be achieved by supporting scientific research and development, developing graduate studies, and enhancing institutional performance system-wide.

The Deanship of Academic Development and Quality completed a series of training programs in the first academic semester of this year. This wide array of programs is designed to enhance our faculty members' skills and abilities. Topics included but were not limited to practical training in higher education, learning strategies, mind maps, technology in teaching, forming and evaluating learning outcomes, advanced strategies in teaching, critical thinking for students, preparing active program plans, and academic communication skills.

A total of 29 training programs and workshops were held during the semester. The male colleges hosted 14 different functions in which a total of 470 male faculty members participated. A total of 15 events were completed on the female campuses in which 322 female faculty members participated.

Vice Rector for Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Merzin Al-Shahrani, Dean of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Hajri, and Vice Dean of Academic Development and Quality, Dr. Hessa Al-Melweth, all thanked Rector Al-Solamy for his dedication and continuing support for faculty development and performance improvement programs.

From the 7th to 11th of Safar, the Deanship of Academic Development and Quality held a training program titled 'Preparing Reviewers'. The primary purpose of the hands-on program approved by the Advisory Quality Development Committee was to prepare qualified internal reviewers in the field of academic development and quality.

The program offered 8 workshops in a 45-hour program that introduced the current needs and conditions in quality accreditation as well as the targeted learning objectives in courses and programs. Additionally, designing the description of academic programs, fieldwork reports, performance indicators, and evaluation studies were covered.

At the end of the program, Dean of the Academic and Quality, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Hajri, thanked His Excellency Rector Al-Solamy and the senior leadership of academic development and quality for their continued support and encouragement in that they sponsor high-quality programs contributing to the development of faculty members.
