His Excellency the University Rector, Dr.Faleh Al-Solamy, sponsored the opening of the second statistics meeting titled "Statistics and the Role it Plays in Data Analysis." The event was organized the Saudi Scientific Statistics Committee in the presence of vice rectors, college deans, and data specialists.
In his speech, Rector Al-Solamy embraced the guests by saying: "I welcome you all into our University and to the Saudi Scientific Statistics Committee. We are all aware of the critical importance data science plays in the different fields of research and knowledge. We are also equally aware of the important role the committee plays in adopting scientific cases and applications." He also stressed the University’s duty to support and guide committees to help achieve national goals and development, adding that the University is always willing to support committees and innovative projects. He further indicated that the committee would establish new branches in various cities around the Kingdom and promised to support the committee both morally and financially. He then asserted that the University would organize a statistics conference every two years. He finally thanked the guests, the University Research Agency, and the University Scientific Committee which will supervise the committee council election.
In his segment, the Interim Committee President, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Mongie, explained that the committee was established after King Khalid University announced that it would be housing the committee and all those interested in the field statistics. He also reported that the committee logo was chosen to reflect the importance of data analysis in relation to the past and the future. He concluded his address by pointing to the committee’s role in strengthening the bond between research centers and statisticians as well as being an authority on statistics within the Kingdom.
On behalf of the participants, Head of the Statistics Department at King Abdulaziz University, Dr. Saeed Al-Ghamdi, thanked King Khalid University for sponsoring the Saudi Scientific Statistics Committee and expressed his sincere gratitude to King Khalid University for adopting the committee and for the time and effort they have put in supporting research and development.
Al-Gamdi added: "It is not a secret to those interested in statistics that the amount of data available from different sources and different methods has made statistical analysis one of the most important fields. This is especially true for us in the Kingdom in accord with our national transformation program."
It is worth mentioning that the meeting consisted of two sessions. The first session was chaired by Dr. Ibrahim Al-Mongie and included three speakers. Dr. Mohammad Abdulaziz Al-Ahmed from the Saudi Statistics Authority discussed "Large data and Official Statistics: The General Statistics Authority Direction." This was followed by Dr. Abdulraheem Saad Al-Arofie who spoke about the "Importance of Research in Social Media." Dr. Eiz Hassan Abdulfatah from King Abdulaziz University spoke about the "Science of Data and the IBM SPSS Modeler." Dr. Saeed Al-Ghamdi chaired the second session. This session included a discussion on the "Role of the National Information Center in National Security and Development" presented by General Mansour Al-Jandal. This was followed by a discussion about "Statistics and the Science of Data" presented by Dr. Aziz Al-Jaeed from the University of Taif.
