Included 5% of renal failure cases and 13,000 treated by dialysis
Community colleges for girls of King Khalid University (KKU) contribute to the awareness of renal diseases.
King Khalid University Community Colleges for Girls have interacted with the World Kidney Day by arranging awareness programs and field visits. The purpose of the programs was to raise awareness of renal disease and ways to prevent it.
The Community College for Girls in Abha, represented by an Awareness Committee, has organized an awareness program. The venue was the theatre of Al-Janoub Women Association, Abha. The program was sponsored by the Dean of the College, Dr. Munira Abu Hamama, the Secretary-General of Al-Janoub Women Association, Mona Al-Breik, and in participation was the Mental Health Laboratory, Abha.
The program included a lecture about the kidney, its diseases, and how to keep it safe. The lecture was presented by Dr. Amina Rafat, a lecturer at KKU. Dr. Rafat explained that the World Kidney Day of 2015 handled a theme titled "kidney health for all" with the aim of drawing attention to the fact that some communities suffer from a high incidence of kidney disease, especially those communities which are experiencing bad social and economic conditions. The lecturer further showed that among the objectives of the World Kidney Day are to raise awareness of renal diseases and to raise the awareness of Diabetes and Hypertension as risk factors that threaten the incidence of chronic kidney disease. In addition, the objectives of the World Kidney Day included encouraging the public for periodic and regular examination of kidney, especially of those who suffer from Diabetes and Hypertension.The aims also included encouraging the public on preventive measures and behaviors, as well as emphasizing the role of the health authorities in fighting against kidney disease.
Regarding important ratios and statistics about kidney diseases, the lecture indicated that 5% of Saudis are infected with chronic kidney failure in stages that do not require dialysis and more than 13,000 patients are being treated by dialysis. The lecturer talked about the causes of the kidney failure in the kingdom, showing that causes associated to Hypertension is 35 %, and Blood Sugar is 39%, in addition to glomeruli hyperplasia, obstruction of the urethra, like Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), renal stone, genetic diseases and congenital malformations of the urethra.
In its turn, the Community College for Girls in Khamis Mushayt participated in the activities of World Kidney Day in Aseer Province, under the slogan "My Kidney is my life". The participation was in collaboration with the Juffali Charity Center for dialysis, Khamis General Hospital, and with the participation of a number of the teaching staff, employees and students of the college. The participants visited a number of kidney failure patients and presented them with gifts. In addition, the reviewers, in various clinics and hospital facilities received education on how to keep the kidney safe.
