King Khalid University concluded the "Development of Forest Fires Risk Management Capabilities" workshop, which was organized in collaboration with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Desertification Control and Monash University. The workshop was held over the span of three days, (16-18 January 2024), at the Exhibition and Conference center in Al-Fara'a University.
Dr. Hamid bin Majdou Al-Qarni, Vice-President for Graduate Studies and Research at King Khalid University, explained that the second interactive workshop was a part of the consultation services project to study ways of forest fires prevention in the southern and southwestern region. The workshop sought to identify the proper strategic risk management methods in the kingdom.
Al-Qarni, also explained that the workshop included field trips to previous forest fires sights in Asir, where the participants explored the reasons that lead to forest fires and how to combat such cases. The workshop concluded with highlighting the proposed local and national procedures for forest fires prevention, while incorporating the best international practices in this field.
On her part, the Director of the Prince Sultan Center for Environmental Research and Natural Resources Sustainability, Dr. Rahma Nasir Gris, pointed out the 4 sessions included in the workshop, a presentation on the previous day's field trips, and a presentation highlighting the kingdom's various mechanisms of forest fires risk management. It is worth noting that the Monash University team gave a presentation outlining the best international practices in the field of forest fires risk management.
