University to organize the Second International Conference "Media and terrorism… means and strategies"

The King Khalid University, represented by the Department of Information and Communication at the Faculty of Humanities, is organizing the Second International Conference titled 'media and terrorism … means and strategies.' The event will take place during the period from 15 to 17 Safar 1438 AH, corresponding to 15 to 17 November 2016 AD.

His Excellency, the Rector of King Khalid University, Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Dawood, has explained that the conference would seek to find ways and strategies to confront terrorism in the media, and to highlight the role and the contributions of the media institutions in dealing with the phenomenon of terrorism. Other things expected to be achieved from the deliberations of the conference include revealing methods and works on forming public opinion that would contribute to spreading the culture of tolerance and moderation in society. The Rector pointed out that dealing with the phenomenon of terrorism in all its methods and means has become one the crucial issues that haunt professionals, supervisors of the media institutions, political systems and international organizations alike. He said, "The University is always keen to get a degree of interaction with the issues and topics of the homeland on a matured and responsible level. Thus, the second international conference will be about one of the most important topics of interest, not only to the Kingdom, but to the whole world as well; the issue of terrorism. The conference will address the media dimensions of this phenomenon, which the world suffers from its spreading in many regions, especially in some Arab countries, making it a complex phenomenon which is affecting not only the psychological aspects, but also the political, the economic and the intellectual aspects."

Rector Al Dawood expressed his happiness with the approval of the High Authorities to allow the King Khalid University to organize the international conference through the media and communications department at the Faculty of Humanities. So, the university will harness all its potentials for the successes of the activities and objectives of the conference. The Conference came within the framework of the state interest, led by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, and the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdul Aziz, and the Deputy Crown Prince, His Royal Highness, Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, and within the commitment and active role of the leadership of the universities in the service of national issues through research and study, and through seminars and conferences.

For his part, the Head of Media and Communications department, the General Supervisor of Afaaq Newspaper, who is also the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the conference, Prof. Dr. Ali bin Shuweil Al-Qarni, has stated that the conference would include five axes, which would discuss the dimensions of the phenomenon, and would raise ways of confronting it. He said, "The reason for choosing the subject of the conference is that terrorism is threatening the security and stability of human societies, and it is a defiant behavior that threatens public order and violates the rules of humanitarian law and custom, and spreads horror and panic in the soul." He continued, "In this context, this conference comes to discuss the dialectical relationship between the media and the terrorism that has obsessed over large areas in the media, and it makes a big controversy on the internet via the social networks, and through addressing the causes of this phenomenon and how it has become global in its dimensions, its purposes, and its effects on individual, on institutions and the on community, especially in light of the profound changes witnessed by the world in various fields."

Prof Al-Qarni added, "The conference will focus on several themes including the definitions of media and terrorism, and how it is transmitted, and the manifestations of disagreement between the countries in the concept and on the ways of confronting it, in addition to the study of the dangers of terrorism and its effects on public life and on the intellectual and on the religious systems in the communities, as well as clarifying the relationship between the media and the spread of the phenomenon of terrorism, defining the media, the legal, and the ethical strategies to ensure contribution in the fight against terrorism, in addition to highlighting the role of religious, of ethical, of legal and of cultural values in the face of terrorism and non-proliferation"

The head of Information and Communication Department, the Chairman of the Scientific Committee invited all those interested in the theme of the conference, particularly the academicians, the media, and from various security, intellectual and cultural sectors, to participate in the provision of worksheets and research to the scientific committee of the conference, and to send summaries of their research and scientific papers with shortened resumes by 22 Shaaban 1437 AH, corresponding to 29th May, 2016 AD, to the following e-mail of the conference: con.masscomm@kku.edu.sa
