Tebyan Discusses Methods of Extremism and Primary Prevention
King Khalid University, in cooperation with the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue, held a number of scientific workshops and training courses to confront extremism through social media, as part of the activities of the Tebyan project, which is organized by the University.
The workshops discussed the concept of extremism; its origin and the way it is confronted. It explained to the youth the characteristics of the extremist, the most prominent of which is the transformation of radical ideas into ostensible behavior, which usually resorts to the use of violence as a means of achieving the principles the extremist believes in. Be that as it may, the extremist may resort to psychological, financial or intellectual terrorism towards everything that hinders achieving the principles and ideas he preaches.
Dr. Issa Al-Duraibi, the Trainer of the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue, said that the reasons for the emergence of this thought are varied. He pointed out that the reference to this view may be intellectual, psychological, political or social reasons, or it is motivated by economic and educational reasons. He asserted that we could not think of only one reason for this phenomenon as it is a synaptic issue.
Al-Duraibi pointed out that modern social networking sites are one of the most important reasons for the spread of extremism. These sites have given its organizations an unlimited flow of information and data that can be used to recruit terrorists and carry out terrorist operations. In addition, social networking sites make it easy to communicate with others, especially youth all over the world. The thing which makes it easy to broadcast ideas in calculated and accurate ways.
Consequently, Dr. Al-Duraibi pointed out that there are numerous innovative ways to confront the problem of extremism and reduce its rapid spread. There are security methods, religious techniques, in addition to the legislative processes. Correspondingly, the media should play a role in confronting all means of extremism and reducing its footprint.
It is worth mentioning that the initiatives and workshops of the Tebyan project and its courses in the previous version benefited more than 4,000 people. The holders look forward to helping more than 7000 persons in the current rollout.
