In cooperation with Microsoft in Saudi Arabia, the Information Technology Directorate (ITD) of King Khalid University held Hour of Code workshops over the past two weeks. The workshops taught students the basics of computer science with Code.org's programming tutorials. The campaign paid several visits to public education schools where the IT female team completed training of 91 female students in cooperation with the First Preparatory School and Arab-WIC. Furthermore, 90 students were trained in collaboration with the Fourth Preparatory School for Girls in Abha. Because creativity is not limited to a specific place, or time, the programming tour bus paid a visit to King Khalid University on Tuesday 26/12/2017 to train 221 students on programming.  The visit lasted for two days.

Saudi Arabian Programming Initiative

This initiative was submitted by the MESC Foundation in partnership with Microsoft. It targeted youth of both genders throughout the Kingdom. The initiative was designed to demystify programming and encourage everyone to learn the basics of this field. The current cooperation with MESC, the Ministry of Education, and Microsoft offer an opportunity for youth to learn the basics of programming in a fun and natural environment. The trainer can allocate any hour from December 4 to December 30, 2017, to provide programming hours at his school, university or community.

What is the Hour of Coding?

The coding hour is a global campaign initiated by Code.org that began in 2013 and reached 100 million students in more than 180 countries. The goal of the campaign is to facilitate "programming" to learn the basics and intensify participation in the field of computer science. King Khalid University and Code.org share the goal of giving every student the opportunity to learn computer science.

Purpose of the Coding Hour

The goal of the "Coding Hour" is not to teach anyone how to become an expert in computer science within an hour. On the contrary, this hour aims to let us know that computer science is fun and very creative and that it can be learned at any age, for all students, regardless of educational backgrounds. Measuring Success in this campaign does not depend on just how much students are learning about computer science. Rather, success is measured through active participation by both genders resulting in increased enrollment and participation in computer science courses at all educational levels.

Today, more than 60,000 students from King Khalid University are taking part in the mid-year academic exams for 1439 AH in more than 29 educational complexes, and from various degrees (bachelor, higher diploma, and master).

The Dean of Admissions and Registration at the University, Dr. Abdulmohsin Al-Qarni, affirmed the University is keen to provide comfort for its students by extending the period of final exams and separating all stages of exams. Last week, students performed practical exams. This week and the next, written exams will start. Students will be tested in over 1500 courses throughout the University.

Al-Qarni stressed that the University, represented by the Deanship of Admissions Registration, engaged in collaborative negotiation with all colleges before administrative closure when creating the final exam schedule. Also, a majority of the students were provided a complete day for one exam coupled with intervals days in an effort to provide the best available scheduling opportunities to our students. He emphasized that all preparations were automated utilizing the hard logic scheduling project management technique in order to achieve the highest levels of accuracy and to avoid scheduling conflicts while reducing the need to arrange alternative exams at the end of the semester. Dr. Al-Qarni further mentioned that the Deanship of Admissions and Registration preemptively broadcasted the schedules of the final exams with all relevant details on the Academia Portal. Details prominently included time and locations of exams. The purpose was to give students enough time to prepare for their exams.

We have reached the critical final exam period, and as a result, students will undergo intense studying and revising. During these final weeks, families of students will stand with their children to help them successfully overcome exams and obtain desired results.

Prayers and Anticipation

Thousands of families are waiting to hear good news in regards to their child's exam results. Every family tries to provide their children with an optimal environment. Much stress usually accompanies exams, and this brings out about the need to search for proven methods that create the conditions of academic excellence. Because the testing period is conducted over a short time, many of the students double their efforts during these weeks when studying.  Numerous characteristics accompany the final exam period – positive and negative – that we should be cognizant of. Educators and psychologists warn of resorting to stimulants during this period because they may result in a sharp drop in the ability to concentrate and a sharp increase in sleep disorders.

The Positive Role of the Family

The preparations of families for the season of final exams are of utmost importance to students and their parents. Educators confirm that it is necessary to manage time efficiently, organize their study time and take a break, as well as sleeping and eating well. The family should help to bear the burden by assisting in the management of time and creating the appropriate atmosphere for the examinee to study and revise thoroughly without being subjected to psychological pressures and the feeling of fear or anxiety.

Many students have a problem in retaining what they have studied as soon as they enter the exam room or start reading the questions. Be that as it may, they are distracted by mundane social activities, and they encounter negative psychological symptoms before the exams such as boredom and motivational factors – a lack thereof –  in addition to suffering anxiety and drowsiness. Therefore, the student has to escape from studying to watch TV programs, talk on the phone, or overeating because he/she feels that all information, inside of his/her mind, will not be retained.

The Difficulty of Studying

Many psychiatrists and social workers presented some tips to alleviate stress and anxiety symptoms that haunt students during studying. They posit that if the student accumulates his/her lessons without systematically studying throughout the academic year, he/she will face difficulty in studying those lessons during exams. Some of the students intensify studying into the late hours of the night over the mere few days that precede exams, and this triggers tiredness and insomnia. It is no surprise, then, that the student will not benefit from this kind of studying, which leads to lack of focus and consequently lower marks, despite his/her significant efforts.

Attainment Measures

The exams are nothing but a collection of what has been studied, and the scale of what the student has attained throughout the entire semester. The student should be wary of the factors which create the conditions for psychological stress to thrive and cramming the night before exams. There is no doubt that if he/she does not do this, he/she will be faced with insurmountable fatigue where they will be unable to learn and remember the material.

Take Responsibility

Examinations are benchmarks of learning throughout the academic life of students, and a way to teach the student responsibility. The habits of the students usually appear in the exams, and those who are ill-prepared academically take a significant retreat in facing the responsibility of exams and overcoming difficulties.

There are also those who run away from confrontation by withdrawing or carelessness, and even more, cheating to escape responsibility. Escape and recklessness are a part of being immature, and this typically occurs in the adolescent stage of life – not in all cases – characterized by adventure and innovation.

Important Tips

Many students ask about how to overcome the anxiety that will affect exam performance. Here, we offer a range of tips that, God willing, will contribute to the success of the students after Allah's reconciliation.

Before the Exam

  • Wake up early
  • Finish studying the critical elements of a subject
  • Have your breakfast to keep active
  • Satisfy your parents and don't miss your prayers
  • Go to the hall a minimum of 30 minutes before the start of the test

In the Exam Room

  • Trust in God.
  • Do not distract yourself with negative thoughts and fear of exams, and remember that the test is a cumulative measure of what you learned throughout the year.
  • Acknowledge that you have done, and are doing, your best.

Dealing with the Exam Paper

  • Start with the name of Allah, and then type your name and your student number.
  • Relax; you are in control.
  • Budget your test taking time.
  • If you go blank, skip the question and go on
  • Don't panic when students start handing in their papers. There's no reward for finishing first.
We ask God to help our students and to increase their success in this life and the hereafter.
Students Aim for Success
