A Saudi medical team, led by Dr. Mohammed bin Lafi Al-Otaibi, the Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at King Khalid University, has successfully conducted a surgery to a young man, aged 22. The patient was suffering from a complete disability to walk, to the extent that he could not live naturally because of sickle cell disease, after his knee joints have been replaced. The operation took place at the Asir Central Hospital in Abha.

Dr. Al-Otaibi said, "The success of this operation was, thanks to God first, and then to the concerted efforts of the doctors of Medical School at the University, who always seek to achieve the vision and mission of the university towards the society, and seek the achievement of all  the desired goals set by the university." Dr. Al-Otaibi further stated, "After a long history of suffering, a knee joint replacement surgery was conducted to the young man. This case is one of the rare cases, in which the patient has been prepared as usual via the unit of blood diseases, headed by Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Shehry. The Specialist of orthopedic surgery, Dr. Ayman Saleh, was within the surgical team." Dr. Al-Otaibi added, "After the operation, the patient thankfully began to walk. Then he was set to a physical therapy stage under the supervision of physiotherapist Abdulrahman Al Asiri."

Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetic disease that usually results from inter marriage of disease holders. Thus, the pre-marital examination is very important.
